Understanding Social Anxiety Disorder
Social anxiety disorder (also called social phobia) is a persistent, intense fear of social situations where a person may be observed, judged, or scrutinized by others. It goes far beyond everyday shyness or nervousness before a presentation. People living with social anxiety often experience overwhelming dread in everyday interactions—ordering food, making phone calls, attending gatherings, or speaking in meetings—and may avoid these situations entirely, even when avoidance disrupts work, school, or relationships.
At Merrimack Valley Behavioral Health in Amesbury, Massachusetts, we provide outpatient treatment for adults 18+ whose social anxiety has begun to narrow their world. Our DPH-licensed programs use evidence-based therapies to help you challenge avoidance, reframe anxious thoughts, and build confidence in social settings. Treatment is available in-person at our historic Mill 77 location or statewide through Virtual IOP.
Social anxiety is treatable. With structured, skill-focused care, many people learn to manage their symptoms, re-engage in meaningful activities, and reclaim parts of life they've been avoiding.
