What Is Virtual IOP?

Virtual IOP (Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program) is online mental health and substance use treatment delivered from our DPH-licensed facility in Amesbury, Massachusetts. You attend group therapy, individual counseling, and skill-building sessions via secure video from your home, office, or anywhere with privacy and internet access.

The schedule mirrors in-person Half Day Treatment—typically 3-5 days per week, about 3 hours per day—but you join remotely. Virtual IOP is a true clinical program, not a self-help app or recorded content. You work with the same licensed clinicians, follow the same evidence-based curriculum, and receive the same level of care as clients who come to our Amesbury location.

Geographic or Mobility Barriers

Adults in rural areas, without transportation, or with physical health or work constraints that make daily travel difficult.

A Typical Virtual IOP Day

Most clients attend Virtual IOP 3-5 days per week, with each session lasting about 3 hours. You log in from home at your scheduled time and join a small group led by a licensed therapist. A typical day includes process group (where you explore current challenges and emotions), a skill-building module (learning coping tools like distress tolerance or cognitive reframing), and an individual or family check-in.

Between sessions, you complete brief homework assignments—mood logs, journaling prompts, or communication exercises—and communicate with your care team via secure messaging. You also meet one-on-one with your therapist and psychiatrist or nurse practitioner for medication management as needed. The structure keeps you accountable and supported while you maintain your daily life.

Therapies Used in Virtual IOP

Virtual IOP draws on the same evidence-based modalities as in-person care, adapted for the online format.

Step-Up and Step-Down Pathways

  1. 1

    Step Up to Virtual IOP

Many adults start Virtual IOP after weekly outpatient therapy isn't enough, or when symptoms intensify and they need more frequent support without full-day commitment.

  2. 2

    Continue from Higher Care

Some clients enter Virtual IOP after completing Full Day Treatment or another higher level of care. Virtual IOP provides continued structure and support while you transition back to work, school, or family responsibilities.

  3. 3

    Step Down to Outpatient

As you stabilize, you may step down to weekly Outpatient therapy (virtual or in-person) for long-term maintenance and relapse prevention.
