How to support someone who may be considering care
Support can begin with a calm, practical conversation: What is making treatment feel necessary now? What kind of information would help? Is there an immediate safety concern? What responsibilities, transportation, privacy, or financial questions may affect the next step? A family member can help collect questions without trying to make a diagnosis or force a treatment decision.
The National Institute of Mental Health notes that support from family and friends can be an important part of recovery after trauma. Read the NIMH PTSD resource for general education. MVBH’s admissions process can explain outpatient options, while clinical decisions are made through an appropriate assessment.
A family member may call to ask about the process, benefits review, and general program structure. Privacy, consent, and participation in care must be addressed appropriately with the individual and treatment team.
