Compare Outpatient Care

Understand program structure before an admissions conversation.

This guide explains how MVBH’s outpatient levels differ: Full Day Treatment (PHP), Half Day Treatment (IOP), Outpatient care, and Virtual IOP for eligible Massachusetts participants. It is not a clinical assessment. A qualified clinician considers current needs, safety, participation requirements, and practical circumstances before recommending a level of care.

How to compare outpatient levels of care

The first comparison is structure. MVBH’s Full Day Treatment, commonly called PHP, typically meets 5-6 days per week for 6 or more hours a day. Half Day Treatment, commonly called IOP, typically meets 3-5 days per week for about 3 hours a day. Outpatient care is generally less frequent. Virtual IOP is available only to eligible participants physically located in Massachusetts during live sessions.

The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration describes intensive outpatient and partial-hospitalization services as outpatient settings that can include individual appointments, groups, and coping-skills work. Read SAMHSA’s treatment-setting overview. That general education does not determine an individual’s care at MVBH.

A meaningful comparison includes more than hours per week. Ask about safety, ability to participate, travel or virtual-care requirements, work and caregiving obligations, support outside program hours, existing providers, and what happens if an outpatient setting is not sufficient.

What an admissions conversation can clarify

An admissions conversation can explain the next steps, the role of a clinical screening, practical program expectations, and how to request a plan-specific benefits review. It cannot guarantee coverage, availability, a start date, or a particular treatment recommendation from a web page.

Call 978-233-9597, visit admissions, or request a benefits callback. Do not include diagnosis, medication, member-ID, trauma history, or other sensitive health details in a general website form.

Treatment terminology notice: At Merrimack Valley Behavioral Health, our day-based programs are referred to as Full Day Treatment and Half Day Treatment. In Massachusetts, insurance providers commonly refer to these levels of care as PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) and IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program). Any reference to PHP or IOP on this site refers to our Full Day Treatment or Half Day Treatment programs.
Detox scope: MVBH does not provide detox onsite. If detox may be needed before outpatient treatment, call our team. We can help identify an appropriate outside detox provider, but cannot guarantee placement, acceptance, transportation, medical clearance, or suitability.
If you are in crisis or having thoughts of suicide: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or 911. MVBH is not an emergency service.
