What Is Group Therapy?
Group Therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which a small group of participants - typically 6 to 12 adults - meet regularly with one or two the clinical team to address mental health or substance use challenges. Sessions are structured, confidential, and goal-oriented, creating a safe space for members to share experiences, learn coping strategies, and support one another.
At Merrimack Valley Behavioral Health in Amesbury, Massachusetts, Group Therapy is a cornerstone of treatment across all levels of care. Groups are evidence-based and designed to complement Individual Therapy, providing adults with both peer connection and clinical guidance as they work toward lasting recovery.
Group sessions may focus on specific themes - such as relapse prevention, emotional regulation, trauma processing, or social skills - depending on the program and participants' needs. This collaborative approach helps reduce isolation, normalize struggles, and build accountability in a supportive environment.
