What Is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of counseling designed to strengthen an individual's own motivation and commitment to change. Rather than directing or confronting, MI practitioners work alongside clients to explore their values, goals, and concerns, helping them discover their own reasons for making changes in their lives.

Developed in the 1980s by psychologists William Miller and Stephen Rollnick, MI has become one of the most widely researched therapeutic approaches for substance use disorders and behavioral health challenges. The method is rooted in respect for client autonomy and the understanding that lasting change comes from within, not from external pressure or advice-giving.

At Merrimack Valley Behavioral Health in Amesbury, Massachusetts, MI is woven into treatment at every level of care. Our clinicians use MI principles to meet clients where they are, honoring their readiness for change while gently guiding them toward wellness.
