Understanding Suicidal Ideation and Crisis

Suicidal ideation refers to thoughts about ending one's life, ranging from fleeting wishes to detailed planning. These thoughts often emerge when emotional pain feels unbearable and a person sees no other way forward. Crisis occurs when ideation intensifies, safety is at immediate risk, or a person begins acting on a plan.

Suicidal thoughts are often symptoms of underlying mental health conditions—depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or co-occurring disorders—not permanent states. With structured care, evidence-based therapy, and the right level of support, many adults regain hope, develop coping skills, and build a life worth living.

Merrimack Valley Behavioral Health (MVBH) provides DPH-licensed outpatient mental health treatment for adults (18+) in Massachusetts who are medically stable and not in acute crisis. We treat the conditions that contribute to suicidal ideation through comprehensive, trauma-informed care at our Amesbury location and statewide via Virtual IOP.
