A Partial Hospitalization Program, or PHP, is the most intensive level of outpatient mental health care available in Massachusetts. At Merrimack Valley Behavioral Health (MVBH) in Amesbury, our Full Day Treatment PHP gives adults structured, daily support without an overnight stay. This guide explains what a PHP is, who it helps, and how it compares to other levels of care. For our program details, see our Full Day Treatment (PHP) page.
What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?
A Partial Hospitalization Program is a short-term, high-intensity outpatient option for adults who need more support than weekly therapy but do not need 24-hour inpatient care. Clients typically attend treatment five to six days a week for six or more hours a day. Programming usually includes individual therapy, group therapy, skills training, psychoeducation, and medication management with a prescriber.
The word "partial" matters. You receive hospital-level clinical structure during the day, then return home each evening. That keeps you connected to family, work, and community while you build coping skills in a safe, supported setting.
How PHP Differs From IOP and Inpatient Care
PHP sits between inpatient hospitalization and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Inpatient care is round-the-clock and residential. PHP is daily but not overnight. IOP (Half Day Treatment) is fewer hours over fewer days, often three to five sessions a week for about three hours each. PHP is the right fit when symptoms need daily structure; IOP works when you are stable enough for less frequent support.
Not sure which level fits? Our PHP vs IOP comparison breaks down the hours, intensity, and who each serves.
Who a PHP Is For
PHP helps adults dealing with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and co-occurring substance use challenges. Common reasons people start PHP include:
- Stepping down from inpatient or residential care and needing continued daily support
- Symptoms that have gotten worse despite weekly therapy and medication
- A mental health crisis that does not require hospital admission but needs close, daily attention
- Transitioning back to work or school after a period of instability
PHP is designed for adults who are safe to return home each evening. If safety is a concern, a higher level of care comes first.
What a Day in PHP Looks Like
A typical PHP day at MVBH includes a mix of group and individual work. Mornings often start with a check-in and a goals group. Midday may include skills training grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), plus psychoeducation on topics like sleep, relationships, and relapse prevention. Afternoons often include individual therapy, family sessions when helpful, and a prescriber visit for medication management.
The schedule is full on purpose. Structure reduces the overwhelm that comes with untreated symptoms and gives you repeated practice with new skills in real time.

What PHP Treats
PHP at MVBH treats adults living with a range of mental health and co-occurring challenges, including depression, anxiety, PTSD and trauma, bipolar disorder, and co-occurring substance use. Programming is not one-size-fits-all. Your treatment plan reflects your diagnosis, history, strengths, and goals, and it shifts as you progress.
Because PHP groups several therapeutic approaches into one week, clients often make faster progress than they would in weekly therapy alone. The daily repetition of skills, plus real-time support from clinicians and peers, is what makes the structure effective.
How Long a PHP Lasts
PHP is short-term by design. A typical course runs a few weeks, though the exact length depends on your needs, progress, and what your insurance approves. Your care team reviews your status regularly and recommends when you are ready to step down to IOP or to weekly outpatient care. The goal is not to keep you in the highest level of care longer than necessary. It is to help you stabilize, build skills, and move to the least intensive level of care that keeps you well.
Medication Management in PHP
Many adults in PHP benefit from medication as part of their care. At MVBH, medication management is provided by a prescriber who works with your therapy team. If you already take medication, your prescriber reviews it. If medication is new for you, your prescriber explains the options, risks, and benefits so you can make an informed choice. Medication is never required to participate, and your preferences are respected throughout.
Insurance and Admissions
Most commercial insurance plans cover PHP, and coverage depends on your specific plan and medical necessity. The fastest path is to verify your insurance with our team. We will confirm benefits, explain any out-of-pocket costs, and walk you through admissions so there are no surprises.
