Outpatient Care Boundaries

Clear emergency and higher-level-care boundaries for an outpatient facility.

MVBH provides outpatient mental-health services for adults in Amesbury, Massachusetts. This guide explains the limits of outpatient care and when it is important to seek immediate emergency or crisis support instead. It does not diagnose a condition or determine a person’s level of care.

When an outpatient conversation is not enough

Outpatient treatment can be a useful option for many adults, but it is not designed for every situation. PHP, IOP, Outpatient care, and Virtual IOP are outpatient services. MVBH does not provide emergency, hospital, residential, overnight, or onsite detox care.

If there is immediate danger, call 911. If someone is in emotional distress or having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988. The 988 Lifeline provides free and confidential support by call, text, and chat.

In a non-emergency situation, a screening can determine whether an outpatient MVBH program may be appropriate or whether another setting should be considered. It is safer to raise concerns directly than to assume a particular outpatient option will fit.

What an admissions conversation can clarify

An admissions conversation can explain the next steps, the role of a clinical screening, practical program expectations, and how to request a plan-specific benefits review. It cannot guarantee coverage, availability, a start date, or a particular treatment recommendation from a web page.

Call 978-233-9597, visit admissions, or request a benefits callback. Do not include diagnosis, medication, member-ID, trauma history, or other sensitive health details in a general website form.

Your path to personalized mental wellness starts here.

Call now or verify your insurance - a confidential conversation, not a commitment.

Treatment terminology notice: At Merrimack Valley Behavioral Health, our day-based programs are referred to as Full Day Treatment and Half Day Treatment. In Massachusetts, insurance providers commonly refer to these levels of care as PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) and IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program). Any reference to PHP or IOP on this site refers to our Full Day Treatment or Half Day Treatment programs.
Detox scope: MVBH does not provide detox onsite. If detox may be needed before outpatient treatment, call our team. We can help identify an appropriate outside detox provider, but cannot guarantee placement, acceptance, transportation, medical clearance, or suitability.
If you are in crisis or having thoughts of suicide: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or 911. MVBH is not an emergency service.
