Admissions Criteria

Who PHP and IOP are built for - and how we decide your level of care.

MVBH admits Massachusetts adults 18 and older who need a higher level of care than weekly therapy but do not require inpatient or residential treatment. PHP fits adults who need full-day structure; IOP fits those who need intensive support while living at home and often working. A clinical prescreen determines the right level. We do not provide detox, inpatient, or residential care - and we don't treat adolescents or children.

Criteria

Who PHP and IOP are built for

A clinical prescreen - not a checklist - decides your level of care.

Age and location

Massachusetts residents, 18 and older. Our programs are built for adults.

Right level of need

You need more than weekly outpatient therapy but are safe outside a hospital. PHP or IOP - not inpatient.

Medical stability

You're medically stable and don't currently need detox, inpatient, or residential care. If you do, we'll help you find the right place.

Motivation for care

You're willing to engage in group and individual therapy, follow a schedule, and participate actively.

Program fit

PHP for full-day structure (often 5 days a week); IOP for half-day intensive support that can fit around work or family.

Insurance or self-pay

We help callers confirm plan-specific benefits, and we'll discuss self-pay options if needed.

PHP or IOP - which fits

PHP is full-day treatment for adults who need intensive, structured support - often people stepping down from inpatient care, or whose symptoms need more than weekly therapy can provide.

IOP is half-day, intensive, and built to fit around your life - work, family, school. Many adults start in PHP and step down to IOP as they stabilize. Virtual IOP delivers the same clinical quality from home.

Treatment terminology notice: At Merrimack Valley Behavioral Health, our day-based programs are referred to as Full Day Treatment and Half Day Treatment. In Massachusetts, insurance providers commonly refer to these levels of care as PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) and IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program). Any reference to PHP or IOP on this site refers to our Full Day Treatment or Half Day Treatment programs.
Detox scope: MVBH does not provide detox onsite. If detox may be needed before outpatient treatment, call our team. We can help identify an appropriate outside detox provider, but cannot guarantee placement, acceptance, transportation, medical clearance, or suitability.
