Music Therapy for Mental Health and Substance Use Recovery

Music Therapy is a clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. At Merrimack Valley Behavioral Health, music therapy is facilitated by credentialed professionals who integrate music-making, listening, improvisation, songwriting, and lyric discussion into treatment for adults navigating depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance use disorders, and co-occurring conditions.

Unlike recreational music or entertainment, music therapy is structured around treatment goals—emotional regulation, trauma processing, relapse prevention, interpersonal connection, and distress tolerance. Sessions may include drumming, vocal expression, guided imagery with music, or collaborative instrument play, tailored to each person's comfort, musical background, and clinical needs.

Music therapy is offered within our Full Day Treatment (PHP), Half Day Treatment (IOP), Outpatient (OP), and Virtual IOP programs at our Amesbury, Massachusetts location and online for adults across the state.
